Summer School in Quantum Computing
Attention Undergrads:
Delve into the cutting-edge laboratories at the University of Waterloo’s Institute for Quantum Computing during an innovative summer program that puts you at the forefront of science and technology.
The Undergraduate School on Experimental Quantum Information Processing (USEQIP) is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to work with the tools to harness and exploit the quantum world. You’ll learn from leading experts in the field at the Institute for Quantum Computing — one of the world’s largest research facility devoted to quantum information processing.
The seminars and workshops of USEQIP are aimed at undergraduate students of engineering, physics, chemistry and math, though all interested students are invited to apply.
Fifteen students will be accepted to the two-week program, with all travel and housing costs funded by the Institute for Quantum Computing.
The program will include introductory lectures and hands-on workshops about such topics as: nuclear magnetic resonance, quantum cryptography, quantum error correction, quantum optics, quantum algorithms and much more.
The deadline for applications is Feb. 21, 2011.

Message from Health Canada
Attention Undergraduate Students!
Health Canada is looking for recent or soon-to-be graduates with bachelor degrees to staff various entry-
level positions in the Health Products and Food Branch. We are looking for science graduates with degrees
in biology, chemistry, pharmacy, bio-medical engineering, biostatistics, medicine and other related fields.
This Branch is home to high calibre scientific staff working to help increase timely access to safe and
efficacious health products that include but are not limited to pharmaceutical drugs, biotherapeutics,
vaccines and medical devices. Before being offered for sale, these products are assessed for clinical efficacy
and quality. After products are on the market, they continue to be monitored for their safety, quality,
and effectiveness. Scientific evidence submitted to Health Canada is reviewed to determine whether the
benefits of a product outweigh any risks associated with its use. An increase in numbers of health products
submitted for approval to Health Canada as well as technological advancements in the field of product
development and testing has created a challenging, stimulating and rewarding work environment. Health
Canada currently has opportunities for exciting careers in health product regulation such as post-market
surveillance, compliance and enforcement.
To meet current and future needs, Health Canada is creating an inventory of candidates, which managers
will be able to access as needed for further assessment, and possible job offers. Current opportunities
exist in the National Capital Region. Preference may be given to Canadian Citizens. Please indicate on your
resume, the reason for which you are entitled to work in Canada: Canadian citizenship, permanent resident
status or work permit. If you wish to apply, please e-mail your resume and a one-page cover letter clearly
indicating why you would be suitable for a position (e.g. education and any other related experience).
Questions and your application should be sent to: Undergraduates-Recruitment@hc-sc.gc.ca. Please note
that candidates who have completed the necessary requirements for their degree by December 2010 may
be considered for employment opportunities prior to those who anticipate completing their degree in April
2011. In keeping with our commitment to diversity, we encourage all persons with disabilities to apply.
Only those candidates considered for further assessments will be contacted.
We look forward to receiving your application and thank you in advance for your interest in working at
Health Canada. We wish you the best of luck in your career search!

A Message from the McGill Sustainability Symposium
McGill's first annual Sustainability Symposium will take place on March 4th, 2011.
The Sustainability Symposium is an initiative to encourage discussion of current research in the field of sustainability. We welcome faculty, students, alumni, and the general public to this all day event. The research symposium will feature inspirational guest speakers, a poster session for graduate and undergraduate students to showcase current research or class projects, and a "world-cafe" discussion. The keynote speaker for the event is Jonathan Foley, current director of the Institute on the Environment at the University of Minnesota, whose work focuses on the complex global environmental systems and their interaction with human societies.
The field of sustainability crosses all departmental lines, and we welcome a diversity of approaches to sustainability. Graduate and undergraduate students from all faculties and departments are encouraged to submit a poster. If your work addresses any aspect of sustainability (environmental, economic, or social) on any scale, this is a wonderful opportunity to share your research with other members of the McGill community who share similar interests. Note that there will be three $200 cash prizes for poster winners.
Registration for the symposium is now open! To register for the event, to submit a poster, or to simply learn more about us, please visit our website at www.
We look forward to seeing you there!
Cheers,
Camille Ouellet-Dallaire, Alexandre Poisson, Laura Bryson, and Sarah Wilson
